Story Behind the Song
A work for string ensemble and woodwind quartet, inspired by Eastham, Mass and the fact that the Pilgrims settled near First Encounter Beach.
I was staying there in May and planning a piece (in my head) when the incredible variety of birdsongs at dawn kept intruding. I have not tried to replicate actual bird cries (no Bob-Whites, exactly) but have tried to capture the spirit of this place with the bird motifs both changing, and being integrated into, the harmonies of the piece.
Steve Layton kindly recorded this version of the piece.Do check out his own extraordinary compositions. He is a master of both traditional and electronic music.
Please note that the volume on this recording is higher than the other pieces in the Eastham Suite and so, on the CD, I have included one with lowered volume though it lacks the clarity of this recording.
